He (peace be upon him) took the trouble into his hands and his approach was "Slavery Eradication by Integration", it was not an overnight removal.<br /><br />As for your question, to the be best of my knowledge, Islam permitted the enslavement of POW (prisoners of war) for the following reasons.<br /><br />1. It was part of the war custom of that time.<br /><br />2. As a measure of deterrence during the time of war.<br /><br />Whichever be the case, Islam brought several guidelines for this. <br /><br />In order to understand whether this is applicable today, one need to go through what really happened during the time of Mohammad the Messenger of God, one need to go through what happened during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, in 1860s, one need to understand what happened during the time of Obama's presidential campaign in 2008.
